The images coming out of Caracas, La Guaira, and surrounding regions are devastating. Apartment buildings collapsed in seconds. At least 1,450 people have been killed, more than 3,150 injured, and nearly 50,000 reported missing. Emergency responders are working around the clock under impossible conditions. Both earthquakes had their epicenters in San Felipe, Yaracuy, in northwestern Venezuela. The 7.2 magnitude foreshock struck at 18:04 Venezuela time, with the 7.5 magnitude mainshock following just 39 seconds later. At this level of seismic intensity, reinforced structures fail, unreinforced buildings collapse entirely, and the resulting damage spreads across entire cities and states. The hardest hit areas have been Caracas and La Guaira, though widespread destruction has also been reported across Miranda and Aragua.

Venezuela had already been navigating a prolonged humanitarian crisis that left millions without reliable access to food, medicine, and basic services even before these earthquakes struck. This disaster has compounded that suffering deeply. The United States Geological Survey estimates that the death toll could rise significantly, potentially exceeding 100,000.
